How Our Pets Fit Into Our Lives
Getting a dog or cat can be a big decision for you. For people without children it could be life changing. I do know many people without children who treat their pets as their children.
I bet we have all known people who have decided to get a dog before children just to see if they can handle that commitment. Well, pets can end up being with you a lot longer. Well, unless the run away or you decide you can’t handle the responsibility that comes with having a pet.
A dog can be a longer in house commitment. Cats and some dogs can live onwards of 20+ years. So realistically, you are responsible for their feeding, pet sitters when you are on vacations, doctor visits and much more.
Children on the other hand do leave. Not totally but they go off to college, eventually they get married and start their own family. Usually leaving behind the dog that they wanted so much and you are left caring for the pet long after the kids are gone.
Getting a dog or cat can be a lifelong commitment. Our pets are a great addition to our families and provide a lifetime of companionship, but they are there to stay. So it’s best to realize this going in instead of after the kids have come and gone.
I know for me I would not change a thing. But I didn’t realize that when my daughter begged us for our cats, it did not occur to me that someday she would leave and they would stay. Now she is off starting her amazing carefree life and I am here hiring a pet sitter to take care of the cats she so desperately wanted.
Before long, your house is quiet and your children are gone. Looking back you can see the separation happening and you don’t realize it. Now, my daughter is off starting her new life, and here I am, glad to have the cats to keep me company.
Loving our pets like we loved our children, feeding them, caring for them and just being happy to see them is all they desire. Cats are extremely independent like those fifteen year olds we had running in and out of the house at one time. Take time to enjoy your pets like you did your kids and they will return the gift for years after those kiddos have flown the coop.
Which brings us to the original questions; are you ready for a pet. I think the better question should be are the parents. This lifelong commitment is one that you will carry long after your children are gone but is also a commitment that can continue to give love in those quiet times and that’s the best thing of all.
