Toilet Training a Cat – Train a cat to use the toilet?

Cats are very intelligent creatures and can be trained to do all manner of things in much the same way as a dog can be taught. One of the most astonishing things that a cat can be trained to do is to use the toilet and not just a litter box, but an actual human toilet!
Apparently, according to those that have actually managed to train their cat to use a human toilet, much in the same way as the cat did in the very popular film, “Meet the Parents,” there are a few toilet training tips that need to be taken into account to manage it. First of all, the cat should ideally be already trained to use the litter tray as this makes it much easier and secondary to that, knowledge of cats is important.
Cats are very hygienic animals by nature so using a few toilet training tips to teach your furry friend to use the toilet shouldn’t be too difficult. It has been commented that they even seem to prefer this option of using a human toilet rather than a litter tray as it is considerably cleaner.
One of the most important toilet training tips that you will need to bear in mind is to make sure that you do this over a longer time scale. It is a gradual process that will depend very much on the cat’s individual personality and for some it can take just a few days whereas with others it may take several weeks.
The first thing that you need to do is to move the litter tray closer to the actual human toilet. Once the cat has become accustomed to the new positioning, lift the litter tray so that it is off the floor, on boxes or similar a little bit per day or every couple of days until it has reached the same height as the toilet seat of the human toilet. Time is essential for toilet training tips such as these and by rushing the process; the cat is less likely to be taught it.
As well as lifting the litter tray itself, one of the best toilet training tips is to reduce the amount of litter in the actual box bit by bit. Once your cat is used to this new height, get a piece of wax paper and tape this over the toilet underneath the actual seat to make sure that the hole is covered. Moving your litter tray closer to the centre of the toilet one day at a time is also another of the toilet training tips that you should use. You should be still reducing the amount of litter in the box and when there is none left, remove the box and hopefully the cat will be using the wax paper in the toilet. When it is, cut a hole in the centre of the wax paper so it is like a mini toilet seat for your cat and gradually make this hole bigger until there is no need for the paper to be there at all. You should then have a perfectly happy, toilet trained cat!
