Having Kittens – How to Help When Your Cat is about to Give Birth

How to Help When Your Cat is About to Give Birth
Your cat doesn’t really need your help in giving birth but you could do some things that will make the experience easier, safer, and more comfortable for her. Once you have learned that your cat is pregnant, you should do the necessary preparations like taking your cat to the veterinarian and finding a place for your cat and the kittens. You must also make sure that you know the signs that could suggest that your cat is ready and about to give birth so you could be prepared for the delivery.
Some of the signs that could tell if your cat is about to give birth are reduced appetite, restlessness, crying sound, vomiting, and blood discharge. When you see these signs, prepare the necessary things that you might need for helping your cat give birth to her kittens like a box where you will put the kittens, extra towels and blankets, clean scissors to cut the umbilical cord, gloves, etc. You could also prepare your cat by trimming the hair around her vaginal area. This will make it easier for you to see the coming kittens. You could also trim the hair around her nipples so the kittens will not have a hard time looking for them when they go hungry.
Your cat will go directly to her nesting place when it’s time to give birth and you should be there from the start. Keep the place secluded and don’t let other animals or other people crowd the area. If you see the placental plug came out of your cat, then the delivery will just be hours away. She will experience some contractions and you might hear her cry with pain or discomfort but this is just normal in giving birth. Each kitten will be born with about half an hour to one hour time interval.
The kittens could come out still covered with the amniotic sac. If your cat didn’t remove the sac immediately, you should not waste any time. Wearing your clean gloves, you could tear the membrane on the area of the kitten’s face. This is to ensure that the kitten could breathe. If there is something that is obstructing the kitten’s nose like membrane or blood, you could use a clean towel and wipe the kitten’s face clean. Put each kitten that comes out in the box that you have prepared. After all the kittens have been born, carefully return them to their mother’s side.
Another important task that you should do is to make sure that each kitten comes out with the placenta. There are some cases where the placenta is left inside the cat’s body and it could cause infection and even death for your cat. But you should leave the removal of the placenta from the cat’s body to a professional. Your cat might also want to eat some of the placenta. Just keep an eye on the placenta that she will eat to make sure that there is no kitten in it.
You can also help in cutting the umbilical cord of the kittens. Most cats would cut it by themselves but it would be better to be prepared in case she didn’t. Prepare gloves, sterilized or clean tools like clamps and scissors. You will also need some antiseptic solution to use in washing the cut umbilical cord of the kitten.
When all the kittens have been born, you cold put them close to their mother and help them find their mother’s nipples. If you think that there is a problem with the kittens’ nursing or feeding, you should contact your vet immediately to seek some professional help.
