Cat Tricks – Can you teach a cat to do tricks?
I have a cat and one of the most common questions that I am asked by my friends and relatives that do not have the pleasure of owning such an animal is “Can you teach a cat to do tricks?” In answer to this question, I always reply with something along the lines of, “It depends how much patience the owner has!”
See, that is the thing, you can teach any animal to do anything as long as you put the right amount of time and effort into it and the same applies for cat tricks. There are some great cat training tips that you can use to make sure that life is easier but at the end of the day, the cat tricks that you can teach depends on your patience as an owner.
The main reason why you see so many dogs perform tricks is because they are very eager to please an owner. You see less cat tricks from a feline friend because they don’t really care about pleasing their owner and are more than happy doing their own thing. Regardless of this, cat tricks can be taught and one of the best cat training tips that you can learn is to pick up on the foods and treats that your feline friend seems to be particularly fond of. These can later be used as treats alongside playing with them, petting or kind words.
Another of the great cat training tips that you should use when trying to teach your cat tricks is to give a treat after every good action at first but then after that, only use the treats intermittently otherwise the cat will expect a treat whenever they have used the litter tray, performed a trick or gone through the cat flap. Learn from my personal experience – this soon gets very expensive especially if your cat has expensive tastes!
One last thing that you need to remember is that all of the cat training tips in the world will not help you if you lose your temper and shout at your feline companion or smack them. They are more likely to run away, be scared of you or just plain ignore you and this will only frustrate both you and the cat even more, resulting in no cat tricks and a rather disobedient pet!
